  • Take your wool rug outside, and shake off any loose dirt or dust that has accumulated since you either bought it or last cleaned it. Be sure that it is dry wherever you shake it out so your wool rug does not get wet and further embed said dirt which you are trying to remove.
  • Give your rug a once-over with a vacuum. Just to make sure all loose particles are removed, it’s smart to give your wool rug a quick vacuum before you get those pesky stains out of it. You should be regularly vacuuming your rug to keep dirt from building up.
  • Wet your rug once all loose dirt has been removed. Hosing down your wool rug outside in a clean area, and then gently sponging the rug with a watered-down detergent solution. To finish the job, rinse all the soapy solution off the rug.
  • Dry your rug immediately. Wool rugs require a quick dry so do your best to get rid of any excess moisture on the rug by squeezing it out or hanging it out to dry under the sun. Do not put your wool rug in a dryer.
  • Prevent long-term stains in the first place by removing them immediately after they occur. For many stains, scrubbing them with diluted water and vinegar mixture normally does the trick. Always blot the rug after a stain-never scrub it. Scrubbing will only deepen the stain so it’s important to pull the stain out, not rub it in.
